Well, the Newsweek magazine recently wrote an article about surrogacy.
They talked to gestational carriers (surrogacy mothers who have another woman’s eggs implanted) all throughout the United States and found that they are really a very diverse group of people.
Some of them are actually pretty well-of woman who just want to help an infertile woman to experience the joy of motherhood.
Others – and one specially caught my attention – do it for financial reasons.
In fact, one of them, from Idaho, said that she became a gestational carrier because she wanted to be able to afford some extra things – like a $6,000 trip to Disney World.
Frankly, that pretty much brought me to a squeeching halt.
A woman that carried another womans baby for 9 month and gave birth because she wanted to take her family to Disney World?
(And spend $6,000 doing so)?
I don’t know folks – but this is going way too far for me.
I realize that the financial incentives DO play a big part in many woman’s motivation to becoming a surrogacy mother – but this is going way too far.
But then who am I to tell others what to do with their money and their womb?
I am generally pro helping infertile couples to build a family – whether it’s through egg donation, surrogacy or other means.
But I think some common sense should be applied.
"I was devastated and so was my husband after being told by my fertility specialist at age 38 that I had no option but to consider adoption or donor eggs (according to my doctor I was out of eggs and gave me 4% chance of getting pregnant and a 2% chance of carrying a baby to full term). After much research and dozens of hours reading infertility related articles and posts online, I have found your book! [...] After one month of trying I became pregnant and had a beautiful healthy boy. Nine months after that I did everything in your book again and after 2 months of trying I got pregnant again and gave birth to another perfect little boy."
