Surrogacy, Military Wives & Money

by admin on March 15, 2009

The LA Times recently wrote about military wives & surrogacy… here’s my condensed version of the original article on surrogacy.

If she had twins, she might be paid an extra $5,000. The homebody mum did not wish to fess up, but she could use the money. She had worked part time at an outfitter in the local mall, but give up when her partner was sent back to the Middle East.

Howard first seriously considered surrogacy after an opportunity meeting at a local pet store 6 years before. Howard liked the sense of being pregnant, the middle of attention, bringing life into the globe. When she saw a pregnant stranger at PetSmart, she approached to ask when the woman was due. The lady, who turned out to be an army other half, explained that she used to be a surrogate. “Military better halves, they do not cry, they do not moan at the drop of a hat. 2 months later, she was coupled with a gay couple in France.

Under their contract, she’d have 3 tries to get pregnant.

If she did not get pregnant, she would only receive about $1,000. On that Ma’s Day, Howard observed the doctor prepare two embryos that’s transferred within her. In eleven days, she would return for a blood test to work out if she was pregnant.

Raised in twelve foster houses, Howard had been a runaway and a self-described party girl.

They married in 1999 and settled in San Diego. Loveless intended to spend the cash on a Caribbean vacation. “All my bills will be paid excepting the vehicle payment,” Loveless claimed over lunch with Howard at a mall in El Cajon. She could not know how girls could carry babies just for the cash. “You can’t rely on it,” she said about surrogacy money. Loveless shrugged and turned back to her potato fries. “If it does not survive, you lost a kid and you are destroying the couple’s hopes,” she announced.

But army brass who’ve attempted to finish the practice had small success. Medical privacy laws forestall the company from forcing ladies to cough up that info. Tricare officers asserted they think there are lots more. Howard stated that she and other army other halves pay their premiums and have earned their benefits. If she signed the contract, she felt she would be inviting them into her life.

A decision was taken during their first meeting in Apr, over lunch at an Italian eaterie near her home. An aid from the surrogacy agency came to interpret, since Howard failed to talk French. Esteban, 46, the taller of the 2 with a short gray-black beard, was a kid psychiatrist. His partner, Jean Michel, fifty, tan and lean with grey hair, worked for the French state. To Howard, they looked pro, even preppy in their Polo sweaters, poring over her photographs. Esteban kept eyeing Izaac, with his untamable brown curls, chubby cheeks and impish smile.

Not able to resist, he lifted the baby out of his high chair and held him close. That is when Howard knew she could trust them. A month after that meeting, Howard was waiting to learn if she was pregnant with Esteban and Jean Michel’s baby. Howard picked up quickly, thinking it was actually the doctor.

The doctor was brief : she wasn’t pregnant. They might have to attend 2 months to try again.

She hadn’t talked to Brian in days, not since he had moved to a desert outpost so remote, he didn’t have running water. “They won’t be carrying the child,” Howard recollected thinking, “but they go thru all of the emotions with me.”. Brian had returned from Iraq at the end of October, but was stationed virtually 200 miles north at Port Hueneme near Oxnard.

Howard went thru the familiar routine on the inspecting table as the doctor transferred 2 of what he called the healthiest embryos he had ever seen.
